Chihuahua City - Creel - El Fuerte, and return to Presidio

DAY 1:   Assemble at 7:30 am at the Holland Hotel in Alpine.  Drive to Presidio (90 minutes).  Breakfast at El Patio Restaurant.  Taxi to Ojinaga, Mexico bus station for 10:00 am departure.  Arrive at 1:30 pm in Chihuahua City.  Transfer downtown to Palacio del Sol Hotel.  Afternoon tour with Pedro Palma including Pancho Villa's home, Quinto Gameras Museum, Cathedral, Aqueduct, and Father Hidalgo's cell.  Dinner at Cafe' del Paseo.

DAY 2:    Taxi to rail station for 6:00 am departure.  Breakfast served on the train.  Arrive in Creel at 11:30 am.  Meet Jose Luis and drive 12 miles to Sierra Lodge, staffed by Tarahumara Indians.  The lodge has been described as "At 7,600 feet, in a pine-scented valley overlooking the Cusarare river, a rustic jewel of rich-toned, varnished logs".  After eating lunch, you will take an easy hike to a waterfall, after which you will have dinner and margaritas.

DAY 3:    Taxi to Creel for sightseeing and shopping.  Catch the noon train.  Eat lunch in the dining car as the train crosses the Sierra Madre, through 97 tunnels and across 36 bridges.  Arrive at El Fuerte at 6:30 pm and taxi to Hotel El Fuerte, a Spanish hacienda dating back 350 years.  Dinner will be on your own at one of a selection of suggested restaurants.

DAY 4:    Breakfast at hotel.  Walking tour of El Fuerte with local guide who will fill us in on the history of the town and region.  The afternoon will be free for sitting in the plaza, strolling along the river bank, or shopping.  Evening meal will be at El Meson de General, a popular restaurant which specializes in seafood and lake bass.  Stay overnight.

DAY 5:    Breakfast at hotel.  Taxi to station (7 miles) to catch the 8:30 am train.  Lunch on the train as it climbs 6,000 feel to the Continental Divide.  Arrive late afternoon in Creel where Jose Luis greets us again and drives us back to Sierra Lodge for cocktails and dinner.  Stay overnight.

DAY 6:    After breakfast, we load up in two Suburbans for the 4-hour drive to Chihuahua, stopping for a picnic lunch on the way.  We pass through Cuautemoc, and observe the efficient Mennonite farms and apple orchards.  We board the 1:00 pm bus departure, arriving at Ojinaga at 4:30 pm.  We take a taxi back across the Rio Grande to Presidio and drive home.
